Distill modern pop songs and it becomes clear that poetry lies at its foundation.
William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, and Taylor Swift are just a few who have traveled down the path of poetry.
Poetry is not only fun to read and listen to, but also fun to write.
Read on for poetry by me
To see what I mean!
Since autumn is here
Leaves are rolling through the air,
Artistic inspiration is everywhere.
So seeing as I was reading the novel
(oops, I mean epic poem) the Iliad,
Here's my original poem:
Hector, Hector— blows the howling wind
The lone defense of Troy, the great man of war
With dreams of victory mountains, mountains high
He breaks into broad smile whilst gazing at his son.
Hector, Hector— blows the howling wind
The Astyanax, Lord of the City and admired by all
Strong and resolute in face of deep, deep chaos
Breaking in silence to join the battle.
Hector, Hector— blows the howling wind
Andromache, his wife pleads for him to stay
Like the willow tree that weeps and weeps
For Hector, a great man of war.
Recently, my teacher Professor Miles assigned the class a poem to write, instead of a long essay, attempting to meet the following criteria:
1)Use repetition
2)Include similitude
3)Draw inspiration from an image in the Iliad
Looking back over my poem, I see that I did indeed meet the criteria for writing this poem. I took a scene from the Iliad, much like Alice Oswald and her version Memorial, which was her version of the Iliad. In addition, I managed to stay true to the plot, but I still infused my poem with new meaning by focusing on the impact that Hector leaving for war had on the people around him.
Despite being homework, this assignment was interesting because it reminded me how much fun poetry is to write. Do you feel inspired to write poetry?
